SBVC Football continues winning streak at home, knocks off the Vaqueros, 31-14

SBVC (3-0) took a nine game home winning streak into tonight's game and extended it, defeating the Glendale Vaqueros (1-2), 31-14.

The home side had struggled over the past couple of games in the early season to put together a complete effort against an opponent. In both games previous, at home against Santa Barbara City and at West LA, SBVC put up huge points early then held on for dear life as they relied on huge plays late to bail them out. The game against Glendale was a solid effort from beginning to end, proving that maybe this veteran team has turned a positive corner going into next week's home game against Mt. San Jacinto.

The one alarming statistic that stands out is the penalties, as SBVC was flagged 16 times for a total of 146 yards, to be fair, Glendale was also flagged many times, with the Vaqueros receiving 13 penalties for 101 yards. In one drive alone, the first drive of the 3rd quarter, Glendale had the ball and SBVC was flagged for pass interference (15 yards), unsportsmanlike conduct (15 yards), roughing the passer (15 yards) and encroachment (5 yards). That's 50 yards of penalties in one drive, and yet Glendale did not score any points. Either that is complete offensive ineptness on the Vaqueros or an awesome SBVC defense; I am guessing the awesome SBVC defense.

SBVC sophomore quarterback Daniel Epperson (Phelan Serrano) went 15 for 22 with 189 yards and one touchdown, including a long of 46 yards, and rushed 7 times for 9 yards. Six different receivers collected multi-catch games, as SBVC spread the ball around fairly evenly.

The improvement on the SBVC offensive line also showed as both freshman running backs Siddique Newkirk (Seattle (WA) Ballard) and Deion Walker (Matthews (NC) Butler) were dominant as the two-headed rushing attack of SBVC. Newkirk and Walker combined for 25 carries, 158 yards and three touchdowns. Walker also added two catches for 56 yards, with a long of 46 yards, which was a second quarter touchdown. Adding the receiving yards, gave Walker 132 all-purpose yards and a total of three touchdowns in the victory.

Sophomore linebacker Chibuike Nwuda (La Verne Damien) was in pure "beast mode" all night, he had five of SBVC's ten sacks. The five sacks by Nwuda totaled a loss of 38 yards and he added two quarterback hurries on top of his eight total tackles. Sophomore linebacker Temerick Harper (Rialto W.A. Carter) led the way for the SBVC defense with 13 total tackles, five solo, and 1.5 tackles for loss totaling 3 yards. The American Division-Mountain Conference Defensive Player Of The Week for week one, sophomore defensive lineman Nick Aguirre (Fontana Henry J. Kaiser), had 10 total tackles, one tackle for a loss of four yards, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Freshman kicker Alex Raya (Beaumont H.S.) although he barely missed his two previous field goal attempts, both were 45 yarders, he connected on a crucial 38 yard field goal late in the 4th quarter to put the game out of reach. Raya made 6 kickoffs totaling 390 yards, including one touchback and made five punts totaling 219 yards, four were inside the 20 yard line, and he hit a 63 yard punt, his longest of the season so far.
