SBVC Blows Open Pitching Duel to Sweep Barstow

Through six innings, Saturday's matchup between the San Bernardino Valley and Barstow College baseball teams was a tight affair.

The Wolverines had scraped together a 3-0 lead thanks to two unearned runs against Barstow starter Hunter Brasher.

But when the Vikings were forced to their bullpen, the SBVC bats came alive, as Valley scored 10 times in their final two at bats to beat Barstow 13-2 in an Inland Empire Athletic Conference game.

The game's two starters shut down the bats of the opposing team through the first six innings. Brasher allowed three runs on three hits from San Bernardino Valley, while striking out seven. SBVC starter Nathan Campos-Jaramillo was just as effective through six, allowing only two hits while striking out seven.

SBVC took the lead in the first, thanks to some troubles at home plate. Cy Robertson led off with a walk, then an out later, stole second. He moved to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, catcher Avery Kirkup had troubles handling a Brasher pitch, allowing Robertson to come home on the passed ball, giving the Wolverines the 1-0 lead.

Valley scored twice more in the fifth. Kaleb Castro led off with a single, then stole second. With one out, Robertson launched a ball to the fence in center, scoring Castro. The Vikings' defense had troubles handling the ball, allowing Robertson to take third. Jaramillo followed with a high pop up to shallow center that was caught by shortstop Brock McCormick, but Robertson tagged and beat the throw home to give SBVC a 3-0 lead.

SBVC added two runs in the seventh, then blew the game open in the eighth. The Wolverines sent 12 men to the plate, scoring eight runs (three unearned) on seven hits.

Robertson ended the game scoring three times while going 1-for-2 at the plate with a pair of walks. Jaramillo - also serving as the team's designated hitter - was 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Juan Ramirez was 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Castro was the only other player with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
