Pitchers Combine to Shut Down San Diego Mesa

Pitchers Combine to Shut Down San Diego Mesa

After a week of rain, and with a rare nonconference Friday game on the scheduled, San Bernardino Valley College baseball coach Jason Kounas decided it was a good time to get as many of his pitchers some time on the mound.

And the strategy seemed to work just fine.

Eight SBVC pitchers combined to hold San Diego Mesa College to five hits and strike out 10 Olympian batters as the Wolverines beat San Diego Mesa 6-3.

Starter Marcos Zamora struck out four in two innings of work, but left with the game tied at 1, giving way to Rovel Leyva, the first of seven pitchers to log a single inning on the mound the rest of the way.

SBVC took the lead for good in the third. Michael McQueen drew his second lead-off walk of the game, and Ryan Callanan was hit by a pitch. After Melchor Flores lined out to left, Jason Del Villar singled deep into the hole at short stop to load the bases. Andrew Griffin worked a walk to push home McQueen. Juan Ramirez followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Callanan.

The Wolverines got two more runs in the fourth. Alexander Jurado led off with a walk, and Cy Robertson followed with a single. McQueen singled home Jurado, with Robertson stopping at second. But Robertson moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch, allowing him to score on Callanan's high chopping ground out to short.

Meanwhile, the changing pitchers kept the Olympians off balance. Jacob Velazquez struck out two in his inning of work, and Anthony Hernandez dispatched the three batters he faced on seven pitches. In all, the eight SBVC pitchers only walked three batters.

McQueen ended the game 1-for-2 with three walks, two runs and an RBI. Robertson finished 3-for-4, including a double, as well as scoring a run and adding an RBI.

Leyva was awarded the win, and Jacob Woods got the final three outs for his second save of the season.
