Del Villar Blasts SBVC to Victory

Jason Del Villar came up in the eighth inning with the San Bernardino Valley College baseball team down a run against visiting Cerro Coso College. The Wolverines had gotten runners on first and second with one out when Del Villar was sent up to pinch hit for Alexander Jurado

While at the plate, pinch runner Salvador Villanueva was picked off of second base, putting the Wolverines down to their last out in the innnig. With a 2-2 count, Del Villar launched a Bobby Rosado pitch over the home run line in left field, giving SBVC a 7-6 lead, that it would hold on to, knocking off the Coyotes for an Inland Empire Athletic Conference victory.

The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, after starting pitcher Diego Castillo worked out of a jam in the top half of the inning. Nathan Campos-Jaramillo led off the bottom half of the inning launching a ball into the gap in right-center field for a triple. He scored on a single by Michael McQueen

After Cerro Coso tied the game in the top of the third, the Wolverines answered with three runs with a two-out rally in the bottom half of the inning. Jaramillo started it with a double down the left field line. McQueen drew a walk, and Ignacio Zamora singled to left to score Jaramillo. Melchor Flores followed with his own double down the left field line, scoring McQueen, and after a throw went awry, Jaramillo was able to score. 

The Coyotes pulled back within one in the top of the fourth, but SBVC got one of them back in the bottom half of the inning. Andrew Griffin and Jurado were each hit by pitches, and Cy Robertson singled home Griffin to give SBVC a 5-3 lead it would hold until the eighth.

In the eighth, Brentt Olmo led off with a homer over the fence in right field. Then pinch hitter Cameron Breeze doubled home Jax Holzem and Dominic Lopez to give the Coyotes their first lead of the day.

Daniel Cano came in to get the final two outs in the eighth, and then a scoreless ninth to pick up the victory. The Wolverines' defense held strong, turning two double plays to shut down the Coyotes' offense.
