Wolverines Face Stiff Competition in San Diego

Running their second race in as many weeks led to some tired legs and a middle of the pack finish for the San Bernardino Valley College women's cross country team at the San Diego Mesa Invitational on Friday, Oct. 1.

Running with pink bows for breast cancer awareness month, the Wolverines finished seventh as a team in the 14-team field. Diana Bautista, fresh off being named the Inland Empire Athletic Conference athlete of the week, led the way for SBVC, finishing sixth in the 5K race with a time of 20 minutes, 15.5 seconds.

The rest of the Wolverines' squad finished in a tight cluster further back. Sashi Torres crossed at 24:54.9, with teammate Lenea Gomez right behind at 25:03.7. Litzy Sales was five spots behind Gomez at 25:22.3, with Noemi Velasquez just three spots behind her at 26:00.2.

"We fared well against some important opponents," said coach Eric Abrams. "This should give us some extra motivation as we prepare for the conference race at the end of the month. But we still have work to do if we want to capture our third consecutive conference title."
