Freshman Tops Field at Cal State Challenge

Freshman Diana Bautista crossed the finish line 11 seconds before any other runner Saturday morning at Cal State San Bernardino, as the San Bernardino Valley College women's cross country team ran its first race of the season.

The freshman from Corona Santiago High School finished the 5 kilometer race with a time of 19 minutes, 19.5 seconds, besting all the other runners in the field, and setting a course record.

Bautista went out with the lead group and made her move after the first mile, increasing her pace and taking the lead away from the field.

"The race plan for the day was to go out with the lead pack and just see what happens," said SBVC coach Eric Abrams. "I thought the early move like the one she made was both gutsy and admirable. I told her to keep pressing and not let anyone come back on her, and she did just that."

Overall, the Wolverines finished fifth as a team in the field of schools from around California.
