SBVC Hits Milestone With Sweep of Desert

The last time the San Bernardino Valley College women's volleyball team finished a season without a losing record, the top movies at the box office were "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and Disney/Pixar's "Cars" and some of the top songs were Justin Timberlake's "SexyBack" and Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie."

In 2006, the SBVC women's volleyball team finished 13-13 and won conference. Since then, the Wolverines have not finished the season with a record of .500 or above.

Wednesday night, the Wolverines clinched a .500 season, and solidified its hold on second place in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference with a three set sweep of College of the Desert, 25-15, 25-19, 25-19.

The Wolverines started slow in the first set, but turned the momentum on back-to-back-to-back service runs by Jae Peterson, Ariana Romero, and Itzana Rojas. Peterson ran off four in a row to turn a 7-6 defecit into a 10-7 lead. Then Romero had back-to-back aces in her six-point run that gave SBVC control at 16-9. The Rojas had five straight serves, including an ace, to move the score to 22-10.

The final two sets were back-and-forth affairs, with SBVC able to take control mid-way through each of them. In the third, the Wolverines fell behind 14-8, but Peterson back at he service line, the Wolverines pulled even and rallied from there to take the win.

Peterson ended the game with three aces, while setter Rojas was credited with five aces, five block assists, and 28 setting assists to help SBVC. The Wolverines also got strong attacking games from Loleaulelei Mamea and her sister Manaia Mamea. Lole led the way with 14 kills, while Manaia finished with 11. 

SBVC begins the second half of the IEAC schedule at Cerro Coso College on Friday.
