SBVC Sweeps Through Copper Mountain

SBVC Sweeps Through Copper Mountain

Two days after Loleaulelei Mamea posted eight aces in a victory over Cerro Coso, her sister Manaia Mamea decided it was her turn.

Manaia posted eight aces and a team-leading 13 kills as the San Bernardino Valley College women's volleyball team beat Copper Mountain 25-10, 25-6, 25-7 in an Inland Empire Athletic Conference match Friday night. It is now the third time in SBVC history that a player has registered eight aces in a single match, tying sister Lole - who accomplished the feat Wednesday - and Ashley Esqueda, who did it in 2001. Becca Beal holds the single-game record, posting 10 aces in 2001.

The Wolverines started slow, only registering eight kills in the first two sets, but finished strong, converting 60 percent of their attempts in the final set with 16 kills.

Manaia ended hitting at a 47.8 percent clip, with 13 kills on 23 attempts, while sister Lole finished with eight kills on 15 attempts (40 percent). Both setters finished the game in double digits, with  Itzana Rojas posting 11 assists, while Annika Ferreras had 10. Ariana Romero added five more aces for SBVC.

The Wolverines will be home twice next week, taking on Victor Valley on Wednesday and Mt. San Jacinto on Friday. Both matches are scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
