SBVC Players Earn All-IEAC Nods

The San Bernardino Valley College women’s soccer team started a new era under new head coach Jenna Lefay. But the team’s showing on the All-Inland Empire Athletic Conference team remained as strong as ever.

The Wolverines had 10 players honored with selections based on voting by conference coaches, with three players each on the first and second teams, with four players earning honorable mentions.

SBVC’s three first teamers are:

  • Makenzie Gilmore, forward: The team’s leader in goals (11) and shots (56 – 31 on goal), Gilmore, a freshman from Yucaipa High, was a dangerous attacker who had a knack for finishing for SBVC,  scoring six goals in three games over six days in September.
  • Maraena Munoz, defender: One of the team’s tri-captains, the sophomore out of Hesperia Sultana High, Munoz was a force on the backline, no matter which side of the field she played. She ended the season with one assist, proving to be an asset making runs down the wing.
  • Samantha Ramirez, forward: Another of the tri-captains, Ramirez handled the middle of the field as an attacker and play-making midfielder. The Riverside Hillcrest High grad had six goals and one assist in her sophomore season.

Earning second team honors are:

  • Kennedy Cardey, defender: Usually the front half of the Wolverines’ central defense, the freshman could also serve up passes and shots on set pieces from distance. A graduate of Riverside’s Martin Luther King High, she had two goals and one assist on the season while plugging up the middle of the field.
  • Madison Coy, defender: The back half of the central defense, the sophomore from Grand Terrace High was a stay-at-home defender who swept away attacks as they came.
  • Haley Weghorst, goalkeeper: The sophomore from Yucaipa High had her second year cut short due to injury, but still was a force in net for SBVC. She finishes her career at SBVC with 137 saves and helping post 10 clean sheets.

Honorable mention selections are:

  • Audri Galindo, midfielder: The freshman from Rialto High led the team with five assists, while also scoring once. She also made four saves, picking up the win in goal in the season finale.
  • Alexia Jimenez, midfielder: A graduate of San Bernardino’s Indian Springs High, Jimenez scored a goal and an assist for SBVC in her freshman campaign.
  • Jimena Robles, midfielder: A freshman out of Bloomington High, Robles scored once while patrolling the middle of the field for SBVC.
  • Danira Valenzuela, forward: The third tri-captain, Valenzuela (San Bernardino Cajon) was second on the team with seven goals (along with two assists) in her sophomore season – along with helping complete a clean sheet in goal at the end of the season.
