Sophomores Celebrated in Swan Song

Facing the end of an injury-filled 2023 season, the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team was determined to go out on a winning note for the team's sophomores.

And despite having to resort to using two field players as goalkeepers, the Wolverines walked off the soccer field posting a clean sheet, shutting out Norco College 3-0 Tuesday afternoon.

Both teams struggled to build up an attack during the first half, both working to limit the amount of shots attempted. The Wolverines finally found their break through in the 42nd minute. Angela Serrano received a pass about 24 yards out with her back to goal. She tipped the ball back to Jimena Robles, who floated the ball over the defense and into the top left corner of the net to give SBVC a 1-0 lead at the half.

SBVC scored twice in a three minute span in the second half to put the game out of reach. In the 79th minute, Samantha Ramirez was sent a through ball by Alexia Jimenez, and Ramirez beat Kyra Montero to give the Wolverines a two-goal lead. Then, in the 82nd minute, with Norco pressing to find a goal, Makenzie Gilmore got behind the Norco defense thanks to a pass from Ramirez. One-on-one with Montero, Gilmore flicked the ball with the outside of her right foot inside the right post for her 11th goal of the year.

In her final game, Haley Weghorst - whose season was cut short by injury - got the start in goal. But she was lifted less than a minute in and replaced with Audri Galindo. Galindo made three saves finishing out the first half as the Wolverines' goalkeeper. She was replaced at halftime by Danira Valenzuela, who made one save as the Wolverines defense limited Norco to only three shots in each half.
