SBVC Comeback Falls Short Against Desert

A 10-minute stretch in the first half was the difference Tuesday, as the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team fell to College of the Desert 2-1 in an Inland Empire Athletic Conference game.

In the 30th minute, the Roadrunners began to press the pace in their offensive zone, swarming around the ball and pressuring the SBVC defense. The work paid off when an attempted clear went right to Desert's Ruby Segura, who stepped into a shot from about 25 yards out, and sailed it just under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead.

Less than five minutes later, Desert broke through again. Melanie Ramos-Brizuela sent a ball through to Dalaina Johnson. She stepped around a defender to her right, then fired back to the far post for a 2-0 lead.

SBVC pulled a goal back in the closing moments of the first half. Awarded a free kick about 35 yards from goal deep into stoppage time, Kennedy Cardey booted the ball into the far post to make it 2-1 at the half.

The Wolverines kept the pressure up in the second half, outshooting the Roadrunners 9-6 in the period. The Wolverines dodged a bullet in the 70th minute when Desert's Angelica Leal took a free kick similar to Cardey's hit the post and bounced down in front. A rebound shot by Johnson was cleared from the line by Audri Galindo
