SBVC Wears Down Victor Valley in IEAC Opener

Despite firing 12 shots at the goal in the first half, it took a bit of luck for the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team to take a 1-0 into the intermission.

That goal helped spark the Wolverines, as SBVC scored twice more in the second half to beat Victor Valley College 3-0 in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Victor Valley had chances in the first half, with goalkeeper Haley Weghorst having to push long distance shots over the bar to keep the game scoreless. But in the 44th minute, the Wolverines built up an attack and Marizabel Saucedo got the ball on the right wing. She sent a cross into the box, and the ball hit off the leg of retreating Victor Valley defender and ended up in the back of the net, giving SBVC a 1-0 lead.

After the tight first half, the Wolverines took more control in the second half - outshooting Victor Valley 21-5 in the period. They doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when Audri Galindo split the defense with a pass through to Makenzie Gilmore, and she made no mistake, scoring her ninth of the season.

The Wolverines put the game away in the 89th minute. Awarded a free kick about 40 yards from goal, Kennedy Caredy served the ball to the far post, where Danira Valenzuela ran onto the ball and tucked it in to the net for final goal.

Weghorst made four saves for the win. Victor Valley goalkeeper Elanna Armenta made five saves before leaving the game with an injury. Leslie Quintero made five saves in relief for the Rams.
