SBVC Battles No. 19 El Camino to Draw

With Inland Empire Athletic Conference play beginning next week, the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team took on one final nonconference challenge Friday afternoon, taking on perennial power El Camino College.

The Warriors came in ranked No. 19 in the state in the most recent California Community College Sports Information Association poll, while the Wolverines were playing their fourth game in seven days at home.

Both teams had their chances, but neither team could find the back of the net, and the game ended in a scoreless draw.

El Camino dominated much of the pace of play early in each half, while SBVC found its legs in the latter moments of each period.

El Camino's best chance came in the 50th minute, as SBVC goalkeeper Isabella Ortiz pushed a shot from Jackie Hernandez out of bounds, giving the Warriors a corner kick. Off the ensuing corner, defender Maraena Munoz cleared a shot from El Camino's Ashley Ruiz off the line, but the rebound went to Claire Mahon, whose shot was denied by Ortiz. Ortiz finished the game with five saves.

On the other end, the Wolverines had chances near the end of each half, but none better than 87th minute, when, with the Wolverines buzzing, Alexia Jimenez lofted a shot toward the far post that bounced off the crossbar and bounced back out. El Camino goalkeeper McKenna Morey made six saves.

SBVC opens IEAC play at home next Friday against Victor Valley College. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
