SBVC Holds Off Pesky Palo Verde

Tied at half, the San Bernardino Valley College women's basketball team used a third quarter run to open a lead against Palo Verde College, then held on down the stretch, as the Wolverines beat the Pirates 67-65 in an Inland Empire Athletic Conference game Wednesday night.

SBVC opened the third quarter on a 15-4 run over the first three-plus minutes to take control of the game, leading by as many as 11 with a minute remaining in the third. But in the fourth, the Pirates chipped away at the lead, pulling within two with 37 seconds left. The Wolverines brought the ball into the front court, passing the ball and running down some of the clock, when a foul with 20 seconds left reset the shot clock, giving SBVC the chance to end the game.

Ajayah Lively led the SBVC attack with a game-high 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including making 5 of 8 from beyond the arc. Mo'nikque Lightfoot added 12 points, as the Wolverines had two players finish with 10 rebounds apiece - Dieynaba Sylla and Anaya Singer. Guard Marilynn Jacques finished with 10 assists.

Aniya Brown led the Pirates with 24 points.
