SBVC Sweeps Past Desert in DH

San Bernardino Valley College softball pitchers Alyssa Fonseca and Sofia Gonzalez each found themselves in trouble early in their respective starts in Friday's doubleheader against College of the Desert.

Fonseca, the game one starter, faced a bases-loaded, two-out rally from COD in the second inning - one she ended with a strikeout. In the second game, Gonzalez saw the first three batters of the game reach on singles. But she induced a strikeout, a pop up, and another strikout to emerge unscathed.

Both pitchers were rewarded in the bottom half of each of those innings, as the Wolverines took the lead in each one as they knocked off College of the Desert 6-0 and 8-1 Friday afternoon at the Drayson Center on the campus of Loma Linda University.

In game one, Aubrey Slider singled with one out, and Kaitlynn LaFleur's bunt was thrown away, allowing her to reach second and Slider to advance to third. Audi Pettaway followed with a line shot to left-center to score both and give SBVC a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, LaFleur led off with a single, and stole second. Pettaway hit a fly to right that was dropped, allowing LaFleur to advance to third. The throw to third got away, allowing LaFleur to score and Pettaway to take second. Arianna Gaeta followed by blasting the ball over the fence in left field to give SBVC a 5-0 lead.

That was more than enough for Fonseca. She spread out eight hits, striking out one to move her record above .500 for the season.

In game two, after the drama in the top of the first, Monique Davila and Tara Walker led off with back-to-back singles. After a pop-out, Hannah Guilfoos grounded the ball to third, where it was misplayed, allowing her to reach. A throw back across the diamond to try and get Davila got away, allowing her to score and both runners to move up 60 feet. Slider followed with a groundout to score Walker, but LaFleur added on, hitting a triple to center field to score Guilfoos.

After Desert got on the board in the fifth, the Wolverines rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Walker singled to lead off and Sereya Diaz walked. Guilfoos drove home Walker with a single to left, and Slider singled to load the bases. LaFleur's fielder's choice kept the bases loaded for Pettaway, who slammed a ball to the fence in left-center, clearing the bases. Cristina Lopez followed with a single, then stole second. Jaslyn Sanchez's fly out scored Pettaway to close the scoring.

In the circle, Gonzalez kept the Desert offense off balance all game. She struck out five, while allowing four hits - only one after the first inning.

SBVC will now take on Mt. San Jacinto at 2 p.m Monday in their final home game at the Drayson Center this season, followed by a doubleheader at Chaffey on Friday.
