SBVC Knocks Out Imperial Valley

SBVC Knocks Out Imperial Valley

With a crucial stretch of five games starting Friday, the San Bernardino Valley College softball team got a little tune-up Wednesday afternoon at Loma Linda University's Drayson Center.

The Wolverines used a 10-run second inning to take control, then cruised to a 14-0 victory over winless Imperial Valley College in a nonconference game.

SBVC sent 14 players to the plate in the second, with Aubrey Slider and Kaitlynn LaFleur hitting back-to-back doubles - LaFleur's hit bringing home Hannah Guilfoos, who led off being hit by a pitch. Audi Pettaway followed with a single to right that scored Slider and LaFleur. In her second plate appearance in the inning Guilfoos ripped a triple down the right field line to bring home two.

Valley tacked on four more in the fourth thanks to one swing of the bat. After the first three batters in the inning reached, loading the bases, Pettaway stepped up and launched a shot over the fence down the left field line for a grand slam, capping her perfect day at the plate. Pettaway ended the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored and eight runs batted in. Guilfoos scored three times and had the two RBI, while LaFleur was also 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.

Meanwhile, the Valley pitching staff kept the Imperial Valley bats silent until the fifth. Sofia Gonzalez faced 10 batters in her three innings of work, walking one and striking out four. Alyssa Fonseca pitched the final two innings, also striking out four and allowing Imperial Valley's only hit, a bloop that fell between shortstop Tara Walker and left fielder Maelaya Diaz in the fifth inning.

SBVC will close out the regular season with five Inland Empire Athletic Conference games over six days, starting with a doubleheader against College of the Desert starting at 11 a.m. Friday at the Drayson Center. The Wolverines will then face Mt. San Jacinto at home Monday before closing out with a doubleheader at Chaffey on Wednesday.
