SBVC Tames Coyotes in Doubleheader Sweep

SBVC Tames Coyotes in Doubleheader Sweep

The San Bernardino Valley College softball team scored early and often Friday, as the Wolverines swept a doubleheader with Cerro Coso 16-1 and 13-1 in a pair of games that ended after five innings due to the run rule.

But just as big a story in the first game was the pitching of Sofia Gonzalez. The sophomore threw a perfect first inning, striking out the first three batters she faced on nine pitches, then she went on to strike out the side in the second and third innings as well for nine straight strikeouts. In the fourth, she retired leadoff batter Kristianna Calderon on a pop out to Monique Davila before Allee Thompson broke up the perfect game with a bloop single to right. Gonzalez ended the game allowing a run on four hits while striking out 12.

But by then, the Wolverines were already up 14-0, as they scored 12 times in the second inning to blow the game open. In the inning, 16 players came to the plate as the Valley lineup battered starting pitcher Coran Rogers for nine hits, while taking advantage of four Cerro Coso errors. Hannah Guilfoos had four runs batted in during the inning with a single and a double. She ended the game 3-for-3 with six RBI and a run scored. Tara Walker finished Game 1 going 4-for-4 with a double, triple, three runs scored and three RBI.

In game two, the Valley defense struggled in the first inning, allowing the Coyotes to jump out to a 1-0 lead thanks to two errors and one hit. But the offense bounced back in the bottom half of the inning. Guilfoos picked up where she left off, singling home two, then the Wolverines took advantage of four straight walks to make it 4-1 before Jaslyn Sanchez's fly ball scored Nataly Gutierrez to make it 5-1.

SBVC pounded out seven hits in the second, scoring six more times, with Guilfoos driving home another run, and Aubrey Slider doubling down the right field line to score Sereya Diaz and Guilfoos. Guilfoos ended game two going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Slider was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Gutierrez was also 2-for-2 with three runs scored.

In the circle, Alyssa Fonseca shook off the first inning, spreading out four Cerro Coso hits and striking out four to move her record to 6-6 on the season.
