Cross Country Teams Headed Back to State Championships

The San Bernardino Valley College cross country teams punched their tickets for return trips to the State Championships in Fresno with their results at the Southern California Regionals on Friday at El Dorado Regional Park in Long Beach.

Vicente Quiroz helped pace the men's team to a fifth place finish at the event. Quiroz, a graduate of Cajon High School in San Bernardino, finished 12th overall in the field, stopping the clock 20 minutes, 5.4 seconds on the four-mile course. Jacob Mendiola and Christopher Valderrama put the Wolverines in solid scoring position, finishing 28th (20:34) and 30th (20:42) respectively. Elijah McBroom was not far behind, finishing 42nd at 21:08.8.

Fercis Torres, who ran the race under the weather, was the fifth SBVC runner to cross the line, finishing 92nd at 22:16.7, with Alan Nava finishing in 93rd at 22:20.1

On the women's side, the Wolverines finished ninth as a team. Sara Jaquez was the first to finish for SBVC, finishing the 5 kilometer course at 19:26.2. Ximena Martinez was next across the line, finishing at 20:45.3 for 57th overall. Yoselin Canseco was close behind, finishing 63rd at 20:52.3.

Alondra Mayorga and Audrey Garcia closed out the scoring for the Wolverines, with Mayorga finishing 82nd at 21:34.1 and Garcia at 86th at 22:02.7.

The teams will now prepare for the State Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno on Nov. 18.
