Late Rally, Overtime Propel SBVC past MSJC

With time ticking down, and a grasp on the Inland Empire Athletic Conference championship slipping away, the San Bernardino Valley College men's basketball team found another gear.

The Wolverines went on a 16-4 run in the final 2:54 of the second half, capped by a three-pointer by Brandon Thompson with 16 seconds remaining to force overtime, and then the Wolverines stayed in that gear in the extra five minutes to beat Mt. San Jacinto College 101-92 Saturday afternoon in a heated affair inside the SBVC Athletics Complex.

SBVC (21-5 overall, 13-2 in the IEAC) now sits a half-game ahead of Copper Mountain College (16-11, 13-3) in the IEAC standings, with the Wolverines still to play one more conference game at Victor Valley College on Wednesday. SBVC beat Copper Mountain in both of the team's meetings this season.

SBVC started out hot in the battle of rivals, leading by as many as 15 in the first half. But the Eagles hung around, trailing by seven after 20 minutes. In the second half, the Wolverines went cold, making only 42.1 percent of their shots. Meanwhile, the Eagles used an advantage at the free throw line to chip away and take the lead. Mt. San Jacinto led by 12 points with 2:54 remaining, setting up the frantic finish by the Wolverines.

In overtime, the SBVC defense clamped down on the Eagles, holding MSJC to only 1-of-8 shooting in the extra period. Meanwhile, the Wolverines made 3-of-6, while making 8 of 12 attempts from the free throw line to pull out the victory.

Dominique Daniels led the scoring charge for the Wolverines, scoring 27 points, with 14 assists and seven rebounds in the win. Armon Muldrew, whose layup started the Wolverines' late run, had 25 points. And Thompson, whose three sent the game to overtime, had 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, inlcuding 6-of-10 from beyond the arc.

The Eagles were paced by Anton Mozga, who had 23 points and 14 rebounds in the game. Josh Hardiman also added 23 points off the bench for the Eagles.
