Wolverines Rally Late in IEAC Opener

After a scheduled week off, the San Bernardino Valley College women's volleyball team returned to the court Oct. 1 to open Inland Empire Athletic Conference play against College of the Desert.

And after a slow start in the first set, the Wolverines came back to challenge the Roadrunners down the stretch before falling in three sets 25-15, 25-14, 25-22.

In the first set, the Wolverines registered one kill, but were able to make runs to keep the game close. In the second set, the Wolverines again fell behind early, but got its offense firing, converting seven kills. The third saw SBVC get out to an early lead, but a stingy Roadrunner defense - COD registered 52 digs in the game - cut off any chance of forcing extra sets.

SBVC's offense was spread around, with both Mahalynn Sawyer and Leilani Cooper each registering four kills, while Abigail Hildebrand and Grabiela Garay adding three kills apiece. Defensively, Jordan Segura and Sidney Habaradas had 10 digs apiece.

The Wolverines are now facing another week off, as both Victor Valley and Copper Mountain Colleges were forced to cancel their volleyball seasons. SBVC will return to action Oct. 13 at Cerro Coso College, before returning home Oct. 20 against Mt. San Jacinto.
