SBVC Clips Eagles to Open Conference

Opening Inland Empire Athletic Conference play Tuesday afternoon, the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team was looking to get off on the right foot.

Thanks to the big foot of Grace Baeza, with a little help from the wind, the Wolverines did just that. And they carried the momentum to a 2-0 victory over Mt. San Jacinto College.

In the 12th minute, Baeza launched a goal kick down field. It carried past midfield and bounced over the head of a Mt. San Jacinto defender. Melanie Bravo raced by the defender and gathered the ball and fired it in stride past goalkeeper Kimberly Estrada to give SBVC the 1-0 lead.

The Wolverines kept the pressure on the Eagles and it paid off in the 19th minute. Sienna Villalobos dug the ball out of a scrum on the left side of the goal, and she passed it across where Jayla Orozco put it in the back post to make it 2-0.

SBVC nearly made it 3-0 before the end of the half, thanks again to the wind. Anna Bailey was able to corral a long ball and got around Estrada. But her shot hit the bottom right post and bounced out, leaving the score at 2-0 after 45 minutes.

Both teams picked up the shots in the second half, but the Eagles were unable to get many of their opportunities on goal. They had several good looks, but could not find the frame. Meanwhile, Estrada made six of her seven saves in the second half.

Bella Silva was only called upon to make one save for the Wolverines in her second consecutive clean sheet.

SBVC nexts plays at 4 p.m. Friday at Norco College.
