Wolverines Rally to Beat Chaffey in Shootout

With the game winding down, and the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team's season hanging on by mere seconds, Nayeli Sandoval found herself alone on the back post.

And as the ball came across the goal from the left wing, it flew right toward her. Sandoval made no mistake, putting her head onto the ball, putting into the back of the net, tying Tuesday's CCCAA Second Round playoff game at Chaffey College at 1, effectively sending the game to extra time.

After a scoreless extra 30 minutes, Vanessa Casillas made two saves in the shootout, and four Wolverines scored from the penalty spot to help the Wolverines advance to Saturday's Regional Final game with a victory over the Panthers. The Wolverines won in the shootout 4-1.

San Bernardino, the fifth seed in Southern California, controlled much of the play against the fourth-seeded Panthers. SBVC had several looks at the goal in the first half, including one ball that was nearly knocked into the goal by a Chaffey defender, but the teams went to the break tied at zero.

Chaffey finally broke the scoreless tie in the 70th minute, when Rebecca Gonzalez chased down a long ball and beat Casillas in a race in the penalty box. Gonzalez chipped the ball over a sliding Casillas into the net.

Karen Jacobs nearly got the go-ahead goal in the second extra time period, as she broke through the Panthers' defense for a one-on-one. But a Panther defender was able to catch her, and tip Jacobs' shot over the net.

The Wolverines will play the winner of Antelope Valley at No. 1 Cerritos on Saturday. Stay tuned to SBVCAthletics.com and the SBVC Athletics social media channels for updates.
