SBVC Starts New Era with Strong Win

It's always a good thing for a team to start its season off on the right foot with a win.

For the 2021-22 season, it may be even more important as teams return to action after a year away due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

So, the San Bernardino Valley College women's basketball team got to walk off the court on that proverbial right foot Friday night, as the Wolverines beat Compton College 51-37 as part of the Valley Invitational.

The two teams played a see-saw first quarter, but SBVC found its game in the second. Down 13-10, the Wolverines went on a 12-0 run to take a 22-13 lead, and outscored Compton 19-11 in the period to go to the break with a 29-20 lead.

In the third, the Wolverines extended their lead. SBVC scored the first five points of the quarter, as both teams struggled coming back from the half. ended the quarter on a 9-1 run to lead 43-27 after 30 minutes.

The Wolverines were led by Tyshawnna Corley, who had 15 points, while returning sophomore Candee Evans had a double-double, with 13 points and 11 rebounds, along with two blocked shots. Jaime Chambers added 10 points from the post, while also blocking two shots.

Compton was led by Destiny Arambula-Jimenez, who had 14 points. While Siera Crook came off the bench with 12 points and 25 rebounds.

The action will continue Saturday and Sunday, with three games each day. Action begins at 1 p.m. each day.
