The San Bernardino Valley College softball team opened its season on campus for the first time in 12 years Friday afternoon. And the Wolverines earned a split in a doubleheader against Rio Hondo College.
In Game 1, the Wolverines were able to get off to a quick start, as Jordan Knighton led off the bottom of the first by slamming the first pitch she saw to deep right field for a leadoff triple. Emma Rubio followed with a bloop single to left to score Knighton and give SBVC the early 1-0 lead.
In the second, Analisa Gonzalez led off with a double, and Jayda Castro drew a walk. With Sara Montez at the plate, Gonzalez stole third, and Castro advanced to second later on a wild pitch. Montez hit a line shot that glanced off third baseman Abby Ramirez's glove allowing Gonzalez to score, but Castro was erased after being hung up between second and third on the play.
After Rio Hondo cut the lead in half in the fourth, the Wolverines picked up insurance runs in the fifth. With one out, Mariah Carter singled to left, and advanced to second when the left fielder misplayed the ball. An out later, Gonzalez lined a ball off the first-base bag to score Carter on a double. Then she scored on a single up the middle by Castro.
From there, it was SBVC's defense and pitcher Nathalia Chavez were able to shut down the Roadrunners. Chavez struck out 11, while allowing eight hits and only walking two while only allowing one earned run.
Knighton finished the game 4-for-4 with two runs scored, while Gonzalez was 2-for-2 (both doubles), with two runs scored and an RBI.
In game two, the teams adjusted their lineups, as it finished with an 18-12 win for Rio Hondo.
