Big Bats Propel SBVC to Sweep of Glendale

Audi Pettaway's first inning grand slam was the big hit in a seven-run first inning, as the San Bernardino Valley College softball team jumped out to a 7-1 lead en route to a 14-4 win in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, completing a sweep of Glendale College after winning game one 7-3.

SBVC had a 9-2 lead after three innings in the second game, then added five more in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Pettaway walked, then stole second. Sierra Banuelos followed with a double to score Pettaway. Laila Montoya followed with a shot over the fence in right field, making it 12-2. Then, Eileen Lopez, Aniya Lane and Patricia Levi Luna hit back-to-back-to-back doubles for two more runs, giving SBVC a 14-2 advantage going into the fifth.

That was enough for Sofia Gonzalez, who celebrated her birthday with her third win of the season. She struck out seven, allowing six hits in the five-inning game.

In the first game, the Wolverines fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, but got a run back in the bottom half of the inning as Sereya Diaz singled home Lane. SBVC got two more in the third inning, Luna led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. She then went to third on another errant throw. That allowed her to score one batter later as Joclynn Redell singled her home. Elizabeth Espinosa came in to run for Redell, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She scored on a single by Diana Ruiz.

The Wolverines broke it open in the fifth. Diaz and Redell had back-to-back singles, and moved up on a wild pitch. Ruiz followed with a shot that was bobbled at third, allowing Diaz to score. Pettaway followed with a single to score Redell. Banuelos singled to load the bases and chase Glendale starter Torii Forsberg. Marlene Velasquez greeted reliever Triniti Akau with a single to score Ruiz and Pettaway.

Meanwhile, Sofia Gonzalez was solid in the circle for SBVC. She got the complete game victory, allowing six hits and striking out two.

Pettaway ended the day 3-for-4 at the plate, with three runs, five RBI and two walks. Lane scored four times in the two games and had a pair of RBI, while also stealing two bases. And the Wolverines did not strike out once in the two games.
