SBVC Blanks Cerro Coso in IEAC Game

The San Bernardino Valley Colege softball team took advantage of a pair of early mistakes by Cerro Coso College, and built upon an early lead to cruise to a 6-0 victory Wednesday afternoon at Chavez Park in the city of Colton.

Aniya Lane got all the runs the Wolverines would need from her leadoff spot in the bottom of the first. She bunted the ball up the third base side, and the throw to get her went into right field, allowing her to move to second. A throw from foul grounds on the right field side ended up in left field, allowing Lane to circle the bases and give SBVC an early 1-0 lead.

The Wolverines tacked on one more in the first, as Audi Pettaway delivered a two-out single to score Sereya Diaz to give SBVC a 2-0 lead after one.

That was more than enough for starter Alyssa Fonseca and the SBVC defense. After giving up a leadoff double in the first, Fonseca scattered three more hits - one each in the second, third and fourth innings - while striking out five. She was supported by her defense, including right fielder Eileen Lopez, who turned three singles into outs, throwing out a hitter at first in each of the last three innings.

Lane ended the game going 3-for-4 with a run and RBI, while Diaz was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Joclynn Redell was 3-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored, while Marlene Velasquez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
