Wolverines Overpower Shorthanded Rams

For 25 minutes, the Victor Valley College defense had frustrated the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team's offense. The Rams' offside trap had kept the Wolverines out of the attacking third in the field.

But early in the 26th minute, Cesar Becerra was able to get behind the Rams onside, and as he was settling the ball for a shot inside the penalty box, he was taken down from behind by Hunter Heckman. Heckman's day was done after he was issued a red card, and SBVC's Hector Alba converted the ensuing penalty kick, setting the Wolverines on their way to a 5-0 victory Tuesday afternoon.

Becerra set up the Wolverines' second goal, helping to break that offside trap again. With Victor Valley's defense up near the midfield stripe, he sent a ball up the middle that Jorge Moreno ran through from his own side of the field. Moreno got the ball on the breakaway, and he slotted his shot past a charging Juan Espino for a 2-0 lead at the half.

SBVC widened the lead early in the second half, as they countered quickly after a giveaway deep in the Rams' end. Jose Solis sent a ball across where Moreno had a wide open net to put in his second goal of the game.

Kevin Sutton scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 63rd minute, as he stole the ball near the top of the penalty area, and fired it in under the cross bar. And Nathan Kolonics picked up his first of the season in the 86th minute - with Victor Valley playing two men down after a second yellow card ejection - as he lifted a shot in from about 30 yards out.

In all, the Wolverines outshot the Rams 29-8, with 11 of SBVC's shots ending up on goal.
