Mt. SAC's Quick Strikes Sink Wolverines

When you are taking on a team ranked in the top five in the state, it's best not to have let downs for any period of time - especially in the first five minutes of the half.

That's what happened Monday night, as the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team hosted its second top five team in as many games, as Mt. San Antonio College scored three of its four goals in the opening moments of both halves en route to a 4-1 victory inside SBVC Stadium.

In the fifth minute, Alan Piceno took a pass from Gerardo Cazeras and split the SBVC defense, firing a shot past Arturo Magana for a quick 1-0 lead.

The Wolverines settled things down midway through the half, starting to generate offense of their own. But they had troubles cracking through the Mt. SAC defense.

When the teams returned for the second half, the Mounties scored twice in less than two minutes to put the Wolverines on their heels. Anthony Vargas ran in to the back post and jumped up to tap in a free kick sent in by Herminio Padilla for a 2-0 lead. Padilla then sent Paul Iniguez on a quick counterattack after a failed clear from the SBVC defense.

SBVC got on the board in the 85th minute, as Hector Alba converted from the penalty spot. But the Mounties finished off the scoring with Piceno scoring his second of the night, putting a shot inside the far post past goalkeeper Luis Hernandez.

The Wolverines will play its next three games on the road, before returning home Oct. 22 to take on another ranked team, Chaffey, in SBVC's first Inland Empire Athletic Conference home game.
