Wolverines Tame Jaguars With Quick Outburst

Cesar Becerra broke a 1-1 tie in the 32nd minute and Alexis Torres followed less than two minutes later as the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team defeated Southwestern College 5-1 Tuesday afternoon.

The Wolverines got out to a 1-0 lead, as Hugo Herrera converted a crossing pass from Alfredo Moreira in the 17th minute. But the Jaguars responded about three minutes later, as Jehova Torres hit a half-volley from about 35 yards out underneath the cross bar to tie the game.

But SBVC used the quick counterattacks to take the lead back on Becerra and Torres' goals, going into the half with a 3-1 lead.

Both teams battled in the midfield for most of the second half, until the Wolverines broke through late. Eiglio Ibarra scored twice within two minutes of each other in the 79th and 80th minutes to add insurance and close out the scoring.

While the Wolverines controlled the pace of play, goaltender Christopher Gomez stayed busy, making five saves for the victory.

The win sets up a showdown Friday afternoon against College of the Desert for first place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference.
