SBVC Men’s Soccer almost knocks off Olympians, 2-2

SBVC (3-3-5) had a top ranked team down to their final seconds, but a goal in injury time left them settling for a draw with the San Diego Mesa Olympians (7-1-1), 2-2.

SBVC nearly handed San Diego Mesa their second loss of the season but fell just moments short with a last minute corner kick finding its way into the back of the Wolverines net. SBVC held a one goal lead nearly the entire second half of play.

The Wolverines were off to an amazing start entering the match with an incredible across the field assist from sophomore midfielder Bryan Oropeza (Corona H.S.), which was finished by SBVC freshman midfielder Aldahir Madrid (Fontana H.S.) heading the ball past the Olympians keeper and getting the first score of the game.  The goal came in the 21st minute of play and SBVC took the lead 1-0.

SBVC continued their physical style of play, dominating control of the ball and attacking the Olympians defense. ust ten minutes after SBVC's first goal, the Wolverines were back in scoring position again with a free penalty kick. The penalty kick came from freshman midfielder Alex Gomez (Fontana Azariel Blanchard Miller), who was substituted into the game just minutes beforehand. Gomez took full advantage of his opportunity and provided another amazing goal for SBVC, giving the Wolverines a commanding 2-0 lead. However, Mesa narrowed the deficit with a goal of their own in the 36th minute, coming from a penalty kick. SBVC ended the first half with the lead, 2-1.

The second half started with several shots from SBVC and several yellow cards issued. One of the three yellow cards issued in the second half was received by the Mesa bench after the referees missed an apparent foul to an SBVC player. Without seeing who delivered the foul, the officials gave a "team" yellow card to the Olympians bench. The game continued to get physical between the two teams, but SBVC provided enough defense to keep the lead nearly the entire half until the very last few seconds when Mesa delivered a score from a corner kick, equalizing the score 2-2.  Although SBVC was unable to pull off the win, the Wolverines did hand Mesa their first tie of the season.

SBVC's next game is against Cuyamaca at home on October 6th, with kickoff slated for 4 p.m.
