It was a tale of two halves Saturday night inside of SBVC Stadium.
The first half saw San Bernardino Valley and Victor Valley Colleges combine for 51 points, with only one punt between the two teams. The second half saw the teams combine for eight punts, three points and a blocked field goal, the latter of which was the catalyst for overtime.
In the extra session, the Victor Valley defense created a turnover and then scored on its possession to take the game 33-27.
The teams traded scores on early on, but the Rams took a 24-13 lead after Ethan Lizama returned an errant pass from Kane Richardson down the field to give the Rams the 11-point lead with 9:26 to go in the half.
But SBVC rallied from there. Richardson scored on a 7-yard run to make it 24-20 with 3:57 to go. And after forcing the game's first punt, the Wolverines went 58 yards in five plays, capped off by a 30-yard pass play from Richarson to Jake Roberts to give SBVC the lead at the break.
After the wild first half, things slowed to a crawl in the second. Angel Montero Sanchez's second field goal of the game - this one from 41 yards out - late in the third quarter was the only scoring. But the Rams had a chance to take the lead late.
The Rams got the ball back at its own 41 with 5:51 to go, and drove to the SBVC 3-yard-line before the Wolverines defense tightened up. Quarterback Seth Burbine lost 3 yards on first down, and Jayon Gillett was stopped for no gain on second down. After an incomplete pass on third down at the two-minute time out, the Rams lined up for a go-ahead 22-yard field goal from Montero Sanchez. But Asaad Chapman rushed in untouched from the left side to block the kick, giving the Wolverines one more chance with 1:49 to go.
But SBVC could not get past midfield, setting up the extra session.
The Wolverines' running game was strong throughout the night, racking up 358 yards as a team. Jonathan Coar led the way with 180 yards on 28 carries, including a 50-yard touchdown.
SBVC closes out its nonconference schedule at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 vs. College of the Desert at Cathedral City High School.
