Throughout the 2025 season, the San Bernardino Valley College baseball team has had games get away from them due to defensive errors.
In Thursday's final game, the Wolverines were able to take advantage of another team's miscues to pick up a victory that was capped off with some late-inning drama.
SBVC rallied to tie the game at 7 in the ninth, then trailed by two going into the bottom of the tenth when Cerro Coso's fifth error of the game ignited a one-out rally that ended when Jeremiah Acosta blasted a pitch over the line in left field to give the Wolverines a 10-9 victory.
The Wolverines had taken a 2-1 lead in the third inning thanks to a pair of unearned runs. With the bases loaded and two outs, Luis De Los Santos's pitch glanced off the glove of catcher Stephen Landez allowing Diego Sotelo to score on the passed ball. But Landez's throw to De Los Santos got away, allowing Adrian Diaz to score from second.
Cerro Coso then rebuilt a 7-2 lead with a four-run fourth and two more runs in the fifth. But that's where the Coyotes stayed as the Wolverines chipped away at the lead.
With two outs in the fifth, Ian Burns scored on a double steal with Christofher Melano successfully avoiding a tag at second to make it a 7-3 game. The Wolverines got one more in the sixth - again with two outs - as Sotelo's grounder to first was misplayed allowing Isaiah Pacheco to score.
SBVC cut the lead to one in the seventh. Jesse Bullard led off reaching on an error and Cody Lemler came in to run for him. Melano sacrificed Lemler to second, and Will Van Dyke singled up the middle to score Lemler. Pacheco followed with a single. After a second out, Joseph Guzman singled home Van Dyke, making it 7-6.
The Wolverines left the bases loaded in the eighth, and had a great start to the ninth as Acosta led off with a triple to right-center, and Guzman walked to put runners on the corners. But with Guzman going on a hit-and-run, Sotelo hit a line drive toward the middle that second baseman Ariel Rodriguez - heading to cover second base on the steal - made a diving grab, allowing him to double Sotelo off at first. But Adrian Diaz came through with a two-out hit to left to tie the game.
In the tenth, the Coyotes scored twice, as Rodriguez tripled to left-center to score Andrew Bain, then Rodriguez scored on a single by Bo McKee. Miguel Soto came in to relieve Issac Fabela for the Wolverines, and he got Jordan Boman to ground into a double play - the third of the game by SBVC - to end the threat.
With one out in the bottom half, Van Dyke reached on an error by shortstop Dariel Rios, and Pacheco walked to bring up Acosta for the game-winning hit.
Only five of SBVC's 10 runs were earned in the game, as they took advantage of the five Cerro Coso errors, and the Wolverines outhit the Coyotes 16-12 for the game. Acosta, who came in as a substitute in the fifth inning, ended the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and the game-winning three RBI.
