SBVC Sends Away Chaffey with Big Innings

The San Bernardino Valley College baseball team won its fourth in a row Thursday afternoon, and they did it while playing as the visitors at home.

Field construction at Chaffey College necessitated the unique set up, but the Wolverines felt right at home, winning 12-5.

But the Panthers took advantage of the set up, opening a 3-0 lead after the first two innings, as the SBVC defense struggled early again.

But in the top of the third, the SBVC bats woke up and took control of the game. Parker Pund led off with a single, and Ryan Callanan followed by reaching on an error after trying to bunt Pund over. Alec Castillo followed with a single to load the bases. Jason Lopez followed with a single to score Pund, leaving the bases full for Nathan Campos-Jaramillo. Jaramillo launched a line drive into left-center to clear the bases, and he scored when Guillermo Velasco followed with a double of his own.

The Wolverines added three more runs in the fourth, all with two outs. Castillo and Lopez earned back-to-back walks, and Jaramillo singled to load the bases. Velasco singled home Castillo and Lopez, with Melchor Flores drivnig home Jaramillo, giving the Wolverines an 8-3 lead.

That was more than enough for starter Luis Martinez-Gomez. He scattered eight hits over six innings, giving up five runs - only three earned - and striking out eight. Yahir Sotomayor pitched the final three innings, working out of two bases loaded jams to shut out the Panthers the rest of the way.

Jaramillo was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and four runs batted in, while Velasco was 2-for-4 with three RBI. SBVC pounded out 16 hits against five different Chaffey pitchers.
