When the Covid-19 pandemic shut down sports in 2020, no team at San Bernardino Valley College was impacted more than the baseball team.

The Wolverines struggled out of the gate, but had won five out of their last six, held a 6-1 record in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference and looked poised to contend for a conference championship.

So, Friday afternoon, after 22 months without a regular season game, the Wolverines took the field with a mostly new team and a new head coach in a game against Los Angeles Mission College.

And while the result wasn't what the team wanted - an 11-6 loss to the Eagles - the building blocks appeared to be there for SBVC.

SBVC pounded out 12 hits, and had a runner at second base with less than two outs in each of the first five innings. But the issue for the Wolverines was getting the right hit at the right time, as Mission starter Enrique Espinoza worked out of the jams in all but the fifth, when he limited the damage to only two runs. 

Meanwhile, SBVC starter Noah Parra sailed through the first two innings, but ran into trouble in the third. With one out, he gave up back-to-back home runs over the fence in right field to Daniel Martinez and Alex Sepulveda, before giving up one more in the inning.

With the score 4-2 in the sixth, the wheels came off for SBVC. LA Mission pounded out six hits in the inning, and took advantage of two SBVC errors for a six-run inning that gave the Eagles a 10-2 lead.

SBVC rallied for three runs in the eighth, taking advantage of a leadoff triple from Edward Aldama to cut into the lead. But it was too late.

Aldama finished the game 2-for-5 at the plate, with the triple, an RBI and run scored. Nathan Campos-Jaramillo was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored as well.
