Wolverines Walk Off on Roadrunners

After beating College of the Desert 16-2 in Tuesday's series opener, the San Bernardino Valley College baseball coaching staff knew that the Wolverines would have a harder time against the Roadrunners on Thursday.

For the first two innings, it looked as if the Wolverines would run away with another easy win.

But it didn't turn out that way, as it took a run in the ninth inning to propel the Wolverines to a 8-7 victory.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 4-0 lead after first two innings, but had chances to score more. They left two men on in the first, then, in the second, loaded the bases with no outs, but had to settle for a pair of sacrifice flies to extend their lead.

But, instead of going quietly, the Roadrunners rallied. They tied the game in the fourth, then took the lead with a run in the fifth - and it stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth.

Jesse McGonigal led off the sixth by hitting a towering shot off of Carlos Franco that cleared the screen in left field to tie the game. Then, the Wolverines took advantage of pitching mistakes to take the lead. Samuel Pulido followed McGonigal with a single, then advanced to second and third on wild pitches. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Gage Brandt. With two outs, Derek Bogh singled and stole second, then took third on a wild pitch. Jaden Burns was hit by a pitch, ending the day for Franco. Brennan Morales came in and hit Tyler Bardowell with a pitch to load the bases, and then Ethan Anderegg was the third in a row to get hit, giving the Wolverines a 7-5 lead.

Desert tied it again in the seventh, setting up the heroics in the ninth.

Max Weckel came in to pitch for Desert and struck out Anderegg. Edward Aldama came up to pinch hit for Matthew Glover, and lined a double to left-center, followed by a walk to McGonigal. Weckel then threw one in the dirt, allowing the runners to move up. With the infield in, Pulido lifted a fly ball deep enough to right to score Aldama to win the game.

The two teams will conclude their series Saturday.
