San Bernardino Valley scored three runs in the ninth, but it was not enough as the Wolverines fell to San Diego Mesa 6-5 Tuesday afternoon in the opening game of a three-game series.

The Wolverines had chances throughout the game, but could not push runs across at key times Tuesday. SBVC had the bases loaded with one out in the first, but could not score. Then, in the fourth, Tyler Bardowell led off with a booming double, but was left there, as the next two batters were unable to move him to third. And then, the wildest chance came in the seventh inning.

Mesa had taken a 4-1 lead in the top half of the inning, but SBVC looked as if it could answer back. Samuel Pulido led off the inning by reaching on an error on a pop fly to shallow left. After Edward Aldama struck out, Derek Bogh singled, moving Pulido to third and Jaden Burns walked to load the bases. Matthew Garcia entered the game as a pinch hitter, and hit a sharp grounder that hopped off the mound and off the glove of shortstop Victor Ceniceros right into the hands of second baseman Kevin Van Linge, who was standing on second base. Van Linge threw to first, where Garcia was initially called out, but a bobble by first baseman Jorge Martinez left Garcia safe. But thinking they had turned the double play, the Olympians left the field, allowing Pulido to score, and Garcia to advance to second. Bogh remained at third, frozen by the confusion on the field. 

In the ninth, the Olympians scored a pair of unearned runs to make it 6-2. But Burns came up with a big hit in the bottom half of the inning, tripling to left-center to score Aldama and Pulido. Burns scored on a ground out by Garcia before reliever Braeden Bentley struck out Mason Smith to end it.

The outcome left SBVC starter Pedro Gomez with the hard luck loss in the game. Gomez gave up four runs over 6 2/3 innings Tuesday. He scattered eight hits in the outing, while striking out nine.
