Wolverines One Run Short in Loss to Comets

It looked as if the San Bernardino Valley College baseball team had come back to tie the game in the fifth inning Thursday.

After Jaden Burns singled home Samuel Pulido to make the score 4-3 with two outs in the frame, Tyler Baldowell came up with Peter Roldan on second and Burns on first. With an 0-1 count on Bardowell, Roldan took off to steal third. Pitcher Braden Olthoff made several moves on the mound, throwing the ball over the head of third baseman Justin Folz and out of play, allowing Roldan to score. But the umpires conferred on the play, charging Olthoff only with a balk, forcing Roldan back to third. Baldowell lined out to Folz to end the inning and the threat.

The Wolverines would not get as close again, as they fell to Palomar 4-3.

The Comets opened the scoring in the second, plating three runs on four straight singles, with Mitchell Moralez picking up two RBI on the fourth straight single in the inning.

But SBVC chipped away. Derek Bogh singled home Edward Aldama in the third to make it a 3-1 game, then Mason Smith singled home Burns to make it 3-2.

But in the end, the Comets' pitching staff was too strong. Sophomore Andrew Reitmeyer struck out five of the six batters he faced over the final two innings for his third save of the year. Oltholff also added 10 strikeouts in six innings of work.

Burns ended the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI, while Bogh was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
