The San Bernardino Valley College baseball team took advantage of a defensive mistake to tie the game and rode the arm of Nathaniel Mendoza the rest of the way to beat Compton 5-3 Friday afternoon, sweeping a two-game set against the Tartars.

Down 2-1 in the fifth inning, the Wolverines had loaded the bases with two outs thanks in part to two errors by Compton and designated hitter Tyler Bardowell was at the plate. Compton pitcher Kevin Smith got Bardowell to chase a ball that bounced in the dirt for strike three, and Tartars' catcher Anthony Reyes caught the ball on the bounce and flipped the ball on the ground back to the mound as his teammates started trotting off the field. But heads up baserunning by Bardowell and the rest of the Wolverines allowed Ethan Anderegg to score from third as the Tartans scrambled back to the field on the live ball.

In the sixth, the Wolverines again loaded the bases with two out - this time against reliever Cory Bradley. Gage Brandt, Anderegg and Matt Glover all drew walks against Bradley to load the bases. Patrick Perez came up and laced a single to left-center field to score Brandt and Anderegg to give the Wolverines a 4-2 lead - it was the Wolverines' third and final hit of the game.

Meanwhile, pitcher Nathaniel Mendoza was shutting down the Tartars' lineup. He allowed three runs - only two earned - and five hits over eight innings of work. He struck out 11 while only walking two. Cody Milner pitched the ninth, striking out two, for his second save in as many games against Compton.

Perez led the Wolverines' attack, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two walks, while Anderegg scored twice despite going 0-for-4 at the plate.
