Men's Soccer: Rio Hondo can't hold late lead, falls 3-2 vs. SBVC

For the first 74 minutes of the contest, things were looking good for the Rio Hondo College men's soccer team in their home opener on Tuesday against San Bernardino Valley College. But the Wolverines rallied for three goals over the final 15 minutes to shock the Roadrunners and hand them a defeat by a final score of 3-2.

The loss evened Rio Hondo's record to 1-1 while San Bernardino Valley improved to 2-0.

Rio Hondo jumped ahead thanks to goals by Mauricio Sanchez (assist Carlos Zarate) in the 25th minute and by Moses Gutierrez (assist Christian Bernabe) in the 55th.

But Raymundo Zuniga got SBVC on the board with a goal in the 75th minute and knocked in the game-winner just moments before the final whistle to absolutely stun the Roadrunners.

Jesus Rendon posted six saves in goal for Rio Hondo while Christopher Gomez made five stops for the Wolverines.

Rio Hondo will look to shake off the loss when the Roadrunners return to action on Friday (Sep. 1) at 5 p.m. when they face Fullerton College at the Mt. SAC/Adidas/Azteca Soccer Tournament. RHC will also take on West Hills Lemoore College on Sunday (Sep. 3) at 11 a.m. to wrap up tourney play.
