Track Team Strong at Glendale Event

The Wolverines track and field team competed in the Vaquero Invitation on April 7 at Glendale Community College and came away with lots of seasonal  best times and marks.

Leading the way for SBVC was freshman Eduardo Toris (Hemet) who won the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:51.83. This time eclipsed the state A standard and now ranks Toris 5th in So Cal. Also running well for Valley in the steeplechase were Mauricio Ramos (Big Bear) who took 6th at 10:33.73 and Fernando Vidrio (Bloomington) who clocked 11:05.27.

In the women’s 3K steeplechase, Darilyn Hernandez (Rim of the World), Lilly Armanderiz (Oak Hills) and Roxanna Lopez (Colton) all made their debuts in the event a splashing success. Hernandez became the second best performer in SBVC history with her time of 12:58.27, which earned her 4th place. Armendariz clocked 14:04.42 to take 6th while Lopez finished 7th at 14:45.42. Hernandez’s time ranks her 10th in So Cal.

Carlos De La Torre dropped his seasonal best in the 1500 to 4:01.67 by placing 5th in the event, which is ninth fastest in So Cal. Also running well in the 1500 were John Hernandez (Canyon Springs) 4:10.03 and Michael Ramirez at 4:16.18. Alyssa Benavides dropped 11 seconds off her previous best in the women’s 1500 to win heat two at 5:10.55.

Also running seasonal bests were Brandy Ayala (Big Bear) at 5:19.00, and Vanessa Arlt at 5:42.43. The men’s 800 had bests from Hernandez at 2:00.73, De LaTorre at 2:01.01 and Getzemani Diaz (Arroyo Valley) at 2:02.77.

In the mens 200 meters  Davion Chaney (Arroyo Valley) clocked a seasonal best of 23.25 to take fourth in heat four while Joshua Johnson (San Gorgornio) ran 12.90 to claim fourth in heat six of the 100 meters. Daniel Galeano and Erik Davis (Serrano) took 18th and 22nd in the men’s javelin, with Galeano also taking tenth in the discus and 18th in the shot put. In the women’s field events, Savannah Carter was extremely productive in finishing seventh in the javelin, fourth in the hammer throw, tenth in the shot put and second in the discus. Teammate Damonique Tanori placed ninth in the shot put and tenth in the discus.

Some of the distance runners will get some last minute preparation at the UC Riverside Highlander Challenge on Friday, before the Wolverines will send their teams down to San Diego Mesa on Wednesday, April 18, to compete in the Pacific Coast Conference prelims. PCC finals will be at San Bernardino Valley on Saturday, April 21 with running events starting at 1pm.
