Rebuilding SBVC Squad Coming Together as Team

Six runners. That's what it takes for a cross country team to qualify as for scoring purposes at a meet.

At Saturday's Chaffey Invitiational, the San Bernardino Valley College women's cross country team was one of only three teams to have six scoring runners as they continue building toward the championship season of races.

And while the Wolverines finished third among the three scoring teams, coach Eric Abrams remains optimistic about the season.

"I am personally excited about this rebuilding season, and coaching some athletes who have never participated in cross country before," he said. "Ther are so many rewards this year that really ahve nothing to do with the final score or outcome of each race. This is an incredible group of young ladies to coach."

The team's only sophomore, Sashi Torres, was the first Wolverine across the line, stopping the clock on the 5K course at 25 minutes, 12.7 seconds, good enough for 13th overall. Right behind her was Yoselin Canseco, who finished at 25:24.1.

Two members of the team posted personal bests, as Kariana Ortiz finished at 30:22.3 and Domonique Johnson crossed at 31:02.4.
