SBVC Shows Strong in Season Opening Race

The San Bernardino Valley College women's cross country team got off to a strong start to the 2018 season with a good showing against four-year schools at the Redlands Invitational.

Returning All-American Alyssa Benavides (Redlands High) led the Wolverines with a 13th place finish with a time of 17:35.8 on the 4.5-kilometer course. Freshman Alyssa Johnson (Rialto W.A. Carter) finished two places behind Benavides with a time of 17:46.1.

Overall, the team posted a team time of 1:34:30, more than five minutes faster than the 2017 performance in the same event.

Coach Eric Abrams was impressed with the results, especially the freshmen on the squad, who he said "ran like veterans." Three freshmen placed in the SBVC top seven at the meet. Combined with all seven returners from last year's state championship qualifying team, Abrams is hoping the team will post its best season ever.

"With today's result, I believe we are poised and headed in the right direction," Abrams said.
