The San Bernardino Valley College cross country teams are gearing up for what they hope will be a historic race Saturday morning at Cal State San Bernardino.

The Wolverines will be the hosts for the 2018 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championships, with races beginning at 10 a.m. with the women, and the men following about 10:45 a.m. for the men.

At stake is a possible first, and the continuation of a streak of success that has marked the SBVC cross country program for more than 20 years.

The women come into Saturday's race looking for only their second-ever conference championship, and seem to be in position to challenge for that title. The Wolverines finished third as a team at the Brubaker Invitational two weekends ago, the final major tuneup for the PCAC race. Freshman Alissa Johnson finished second in the race, clocking a 5K time of 19 minutes, 31.9 seconds. Alyssa Benavides, who was the first SBVC female to receive All-American status last year, finished 10th at 20:05.3.

The Wolverines had previous success at Cal State earlier this year. At the Coyote Challenge race, against runners from all levels, but Johnson and Benavides clocked times under 19 minutes.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines' men's team is looking to continue its run of dominance at the conference level. SBVC has won 22 consecutive conference championships, and will have its hands full Saturday.

The team had a rough start to the season, and even finished behind San Diego Mesa at the Southern California Preview race in September. But coach Jim Ratigan has seen improvement since, and hopes to have his team ready for Saturday.
