Wolverines Run Way To State Championships

Alissa Johnson finished 14th and the San Bernardino Valley College women's cross country team finished 10th overall as the Wolverines' qualified for the state championships at the Southern California Championships at Knabe Regional Park in Cerritos.

Johnson finished the 5K course in 18 minutes, 31.3 seconds to lead the Wolverines. Darilyn Hernandez was the next across the line for SBVC, as she stopped the clock at 19:53.9, her first sub-20 minute race at this distance.

While happy with the finish, coach Eric Abrams knows his team has more to offer in Fresno.

"We see room for improvement, and the chance to finish in the top 10 at state," he said. "We are still excited to be headed to state for the sixth time in school history.'

Jessica Aguilera was the third Wolverine to cross the line, clocking in at 20:09.3. Returning All-American Alyssa Benavides suffered an injury about 200 yards into the race, but pressed on for a 20:27.9 finish in 72nd place.
