SBVC Women’s Volleyball opens up Conference play knocking off Rams, 3-2

SBVC (4-9; 1-0) opened up the final season of Foothill Conference play by putting together a solid effort against last year's co-Conference Champs, the Victorville Victor Valley Rams (3-10; 0-1), 23-25, 25-5, 23-25, 28-26, 15-8.

SBVC opened up the first set with a solid lead, but the Rams went on a six set run, putting SBVC in a hard spot. SBVC showed the grit and determination of a winner fighting back to 23-23 late in the match, but the Rams eventually took the first set 25-23.

SBVC then put together their most dominant set of the season as they had scoring runs of 11 points, 5 points and wrapping up the set with a 5 point streak on their way to a 25-5 set victory over the Rams. Freshman middle blocker Ariana Cole (Fontana Azariel Blanchard Miller) was serving throughout the entire 11 point run, which included two aces.

Set three was a true back-and-forth game as SBVC would take a lead, then Victor Valley would tie it and then Victor Valley would take a lead, the SBVC would tie the game. This back-and-forth went late into the match as SBVC valiantly fought to tie the game at 20-20 on a five point run and then again at 23-23, but the Rams eeked out a third set win, 25-23.

As both teams took the court you could see the hunger for victory in the eyes of the SBVC team and this set was a game of streaks as SBVC went on a 5 point run to take an 8-5 lead then the Rams went on a 5 point run of their own. After an SBVC time out, the home side went on another 5 point streak, tying the game at 11-11 then taking a 14-11 lead, led by freshman setter Nayeli Hernandez's two service aces. Both sides then exchanged three point runs, followed by a Rams five point run, at which time SBVC called their second time out with Victor Valley up 19-18. Immediately, SBVC tied the game at 19-19 and then both sides traded three point runs again, as SBVC eventually tied the game at 23-23. SBVC would eventually take a 24-23 lead, the Rams tied it, SBVC took a 25-24 lead, the Rams tied it, then the Rams took a 26-25 lead and SBVC tied the game at 26-26. Hernandez took serve again and fired an ace to seal the victory and take the game into a fifth and deciding set.

Much like the second set, SBVC stepped on the court and took the lead immediately, Victor Valley eventually called their timeout down five points, 7-2. SBVC would wrap up the victory on a 4 point run.

Freshman setter Nayeli Hernandez (San Bernardino Aquinas) led the team with 49 assists, 3 service aces and 8 digs and freshman libero Valerie Navarrete (Fontana A.B. Miller) led the team with 26 digs and a service ace.

Freshman outside hitter Daeja Lewis (Redlands East Valley) collected 7 digs and freshman outside hitter Roslynn Hamilton (Moreno Valley Vista del Lago) had 12 kills and 24 digs.
