Wolverines Take Control Early, Cruise Over Eagles

The San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team scored three times in the opening 10 minutes of Friday's game against Mt. San Jacinto College, and cruised the rest of the way as the Wolverines posted a 5-0 victory over the Eagles.

Nayeli Sandoval played a role in each of the first three goals, as she assisted on two and scored the third. The opener came off a corner kick in the sixth minute, as she served the ball in to the near post, where Marcella Gallo was at the end of the run to nod the ball inside the post for a 1-0 lead.

About 30 seconds later, the Wolverines forced a turnover, and this time Sandoval sent a diagonal ball through the defense, with Eliana Martinez running past the defenders and slotting her shot into the net. Two minutes later, it was Sandoval's turn to find the net. She got a pass from Gallo on the left side, and she drove to the end line. She cut back, beat her defender and blasted the ball into the goal.

It was almost all Wolverines the rest of the way. The Eagles were only able to the ball toward the goal twice - once in each half - with both sailing harmlessly above the cross bar. Taylor Milner got the win, playing the opening 45 minutes, with Kerstin Lecon playing the final half. Neither recorded a save. In all, the Wolverines fired 24 shots toward the Eagles' goal, with 16 of them going on the MSJC goal.

Martinez scored again in the 22nd minute, taking a pass from Rosalva Parades to make it 4-0 at the half. Caitlyn Sauceda converted from the penalty spot in the second half to finish the scoring.
