SBVC Women Suffer First Home Loss Since 2013

In 2011, some members of the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team were still in grade school.

Many things have changed in the world over those eight years, but one thing has been constant - the SBVC women had won or tied every one of its 74 regular season home games over that span.

Friday night, that streak came to an end, as perennial state power Cerritos shut out the Wolverines 2-0.

The Falcons opened the scoring in the seventh minute. McKenzie Cooper collected a through ball to the left wing from Valeria Corrilo. Cooper fired a shot that beat Kerstin Lecon at the near post for the 1-0 lead.

SBVC had chances to draw even throughout the game, but goalkeeper Melanie Corona was there to make the stop each time. She came up big on challenges from Livia Cervantes and Nayeli Sandoval late in the second half to preserve the shutout.

As time wound down, the Falcons put the final nail in the streak. Alessandria Ramirez sailed a free kick into the net from 45 yards out to seal the result.

The Wolverines' home unbeaten streak has been impressive. The last regular season loss came on Nov. 4, 2011, against Antelope Valley College. SBVC was 69-0-5 over that span. The Wolverines' last home loss, including playoffs, was Nov. 23, 2013, a first-round playoff loss to LA Pierce College. SBVC's record at home since the 2013 loss was 54-0-3. The NCAA Division 1 home unbeaten streak record was set by North Carolina, which ran off an 84-game home unbeaten streak.
