Wolverines Outlast Pesky Pirates to Advance

Karen Jacobs scored twice in a three-minute span in the second half to help the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team take a 3-0 lead and the Wolverines held on for a 5-2 victory over Ventura College on Saturday in the first round of the CCCAA Playoffs.

The Wolverines (19-1-2) had several chances in the first half, controlling the flow of play. But it took a steal from Caitlyn Sauceda in the 44th minute to get the Wolverines on the board. Sauceda took the ball just outside of the 18-yard-box and sent a low shot through a maze of legs and into the bottom corner of the Ventura goal to give SBVC a 1-0 halftime lead.

Jacobs took over early in the second half. She stole a ball and walked into the penalty box and fired a shot into the net in the 47th minute. Three minutes later, Jacobs buried a shot from the penalty spot to give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead.

But the Pirates would not go away quietly. In the 65th minute, Aleesa Ramirez took the ball up the right wing and sent a cross to the 6-yard box, where Miranda Vasquez was waiting to head the ball home to make it 3-1.

Less than a minute later, the Wolverines took a three-goal lead again, as Osmara Nunez blasted a shot past goaltender Aracely Castro to make it 4-1.

The Pirates continued to press, cutting the lead in half as Audrey Castillo blasted a pass from Jasmin Ambriz into the net with 20 minutes remaining.

SBVC put the game away in the 87th minute, as Marcella Gallo took the ball up the right side and crossed it where Fabiola Sanchez volleyed the ball on the run to complete the scoring.

The Wolverines advance to the second round game at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chaffey College, a 2-0 winner over Cypress on Saturday.
