Caitlyn Sauceda and Marcela Gallo scored in the game's first 14 minutes as the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team beat Southwestern College 3-1 in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game Friday afternoon at SBVC.
The Wolverines opened the scoring thanks to a set play in the eighth minutes on a free kick. Sauceda took a tap pass from Stephanie Doran and pounded a shot over the wall and under the cross bar from about 30 yards out to give SBVC a 1-0 lead over the South Division-leading Jaguars.
About six minutes later, Gallo pressured Southwestern goaltender Sharon Montoya, who could not handle a ball passed back to her from her defense. Gallo got to the bouncing loose ball and tapped the ball into the vacated net for the 2-0 lead.
The Jaguars cut the lead in half late in the second 45 minutes. Damaris Aguila beat Wolverines' goaltender Vanessa Casillas with a blast. It was the first goal the Wolverines have allowed in conference play this season, and the first goal allowed at SBVC since last November.
But two minutes later, Nayeli Sandoval gave SBVC the two-goal lead back. She took a pass from Fabiola Sanchez and put it into the net to put the game on ice.
Casillas made eight saves in the victory, while Montoya notched six saves.
