Wolverines Clinch Conference Title With Hard-Fought Win

The San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team clinched the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference with a 2-1 victory over MiraCosta College on Tuesday at SBVC.

The Wolverines (18-1-1 overall, 9-0 in PCAC-North play) opened the scoring in the 30th minute as AnneMarie Fazzino followed up a rebound of Jordan Steele's header and headed the ball past Bailee Bolt to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

In the 55th minute, Karen Jacobs tapped home a long cross from Yasmine Montelongo to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead. But the Spartans would not go away, pressing the play after that.

It was just over a minute later when the Spartans (11-7-2, 4-4-1) cut the lead in half. After the ball bounced around the Wolverines' penalty box, Alina Ozuna volleyed the bouncing ball inside the left post to make it a 2-1 game. It was only the third goal allowed by the Wolverines at home this season, and only the seventh conceded on the season.

The game was physical from there, with the Spartans trying to get the equalizer. There were three yellow cards handed out in the final 10 minutes as both teams worked for the next goal.

The Wolverines close out the regular season at 1 p.m. Friday at Palomar College.
